August 31, 1861 — Capt. Shurtliff

Capt. Shurtliff of the 7th Ohio, killed at the battle of Cross Lanes, was a highly respected citizen of DeKalb county in this State, where his relatives now reside. He was called to a professorship at Oberlin, and after the war broke out took command of a company of students and went heartily into the service of his country. He lived long enough to prove that he was a gallant soldier, and to make his loss felt. Only a fortnight ago he had a horse killed under him in a skirmish, but his intrepidity was not dampened by the nearness of danger. He continued the fight on foot until the assailants were dispersed. We know nothing of the circumstances of his death; but we dare assert that he was doing his duty bravely when he died. His body is to be brought home to Illinois for burial.

Giles Shurtleff was not killed in the battle, but was taken prisoner. Exchanged in 1862, he went in (in 1863) to recruit and command the 5th U.S. Colored Troops.
