The Republic of Designers is an online community that highlights designers’ voices from all over the world. We publish our articles on Medium, a community publishing platform that enables anyone to share their thoughts with others.

Here are some common questions about sharing your content on Medium.

What is the Medium Partner Program?

Beginning today, writers can submit their stories to Medium’s Partner Program — a new way for writers to get paid based on how readers engage with their stories. Writers will earn more as members read longer, and they don’t need to change anything about the way they write.

Is my story going to sit behind a paywall?

No. By default, every new story is open for everyone. If you enroll in the Medium Partner Program, your stories that are behind the metered paywall will be eligible to earn money.

How does the paywall work?

When you close an article on Medium, it becomes “member-only”. In reality, readers who are not members will be able to see several articles for free per month, before they are asked to sign up for a Medium membership. Medium will also give you, the author (Medium calls authors “authors”), a “Friend Link”, which is a specific URL you can share with your network so they can read your article for free, regardless of having a Medium account or membership.

By keeping your stories open, you’ll make them accessible to the widest possible audience.

But why pay the writer?

If you are a writer, you should consider all the options for generating revenue from your work, whether it’s an eBook that readers can purchase or a story that is available for people to read for free. Writers take time to hone their craft. Not everyone has the privilege of writing without having to worry about making money, so it’s important to give authors and publishers the option to charge for content.

Does Medium own my content?

The founder of Medium says: “It is free to publish on Medium, your content is always yours, and we will host it for free, indefinitely.”

How much do writers who decide to close their stories get paid?

Medium pays their Partner Program members based on how much time their members spend reading their stories. The more attention a member gives to a story, the more money that member earns for the writer. In addition, a portion of a member’s monthly subscription is paid out to the writers based on how much time a member spends on each story. So if a member reads 10% of your story, you will receive 10% of that member’s share of Medium’s revenue from that month.

Writers do not get paid based on claps.

  • US$ 31,871.89 is the highest amount earned (so far) by a Medium writer.
  • US$ 6,127.77 is the highest amount earned (so far) by a single story on Medium
  • US$ 120 is the average earnings a popular story (one of the top stories on any given week) gets on Medium
  • Most writers make a little less than US$ 11 per story.
