Women to Watch: Pearl Kim, Candidate for Pennsylvania’s Fifth District
This profile is part of Republican Women for Progress’ Women to Watch series, which highlights Republican women running for office in 2018 who are committed to working through the legislative process in a bipartisan way in order to create effective policy at the local, state, and national levels.
Pearl Kim embodies the power of the American Dream. As the daughter of first-generation American citizens who immigrated to the United States from South Korea, Kim was driven to run by a desire to ensure all American families have access to the same type of opportunities afforded her family.
Kim has 11 years of law enforcement experience as an Assistant District Attorney and a Senior Deputy Attorney General for Pennsylvania. She built her career as a special victims prosecutor — securing the first human trafficking conviction in Pennsylvania and working with legislators to update the law and expand protection to victims of trafficking and sex crimes. Kim also used her position to address issues related to the opioid crisis, mental health, campus sexual assault, and alcohol abuse on college campuses.
When her local Congressman decided not to seek re-election, Kim saw the opportunity to follow her personal motto, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” She stepped down from her job in the Office of the Attorney General and announced her intention to run for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District. Kim’s approach to the issues facing the nation is common-sense conservatism; she stands for economic growth, fair and free trade, investment in all educational opportunities, immigration reform, and improving access to health care.
Kim has never been one to be happy with the status quo, and that includes the current political climate. She plans on bringing fresh perspectives to Congress, including her unique personal story, experiences, and background. Her campaign is focused on giving a voice to people in her community who don’t feel like they’re heard. “I truly know what it feels like when you feel the government is not working for you. I’m very passionate about the government being for the people.”
