There should have been an air raid siren before the June 27 presidential debate. The unrelenting barrage of lies spewing out of Donald Trump’s mouth was an all-out attack on America.

The lies and hyperbolic nonsense came at us rapid fire, like bullets from the chain gun on an attack helicopter. Untruth rained down like glide bombs from Vladimir Putin’s air force. Trump stood at his podium, looked America straight in the eye, and marched out his lies like a cannibal army with poisoned teeth, tearing into our brains and eating our hearts.

In the days leading up to the debate there was much discussion among the punditry about what Joe Biden needed to accomplish when he stood at his podium next to Donald Trump.

It turned he had one vital job. Defend the nation from that blitzkrieg of lies.

Didn’t happen. The president’s voice failed him in the opening salvo. He rambled. He lost his train of thought. He looked into the camera like a deer facing headlights. The president who showed up for the debate was a ghost of the man who beat Trump four years ago.
