Mobile Guide to the California High Desert

A virtual museum of an abandoned landscape

App main menu

Clients Arden Stern and James Mann tasked my team with curating deserted locations along Route 66.

What I did

I took the team on a field trip through deserted parts of the high desert. We personally experienced the landscape and took note of our surroundings. This contextual inquiry was an immersive experience as we surveyed the dusty world of abandoned properties and forests of “bottle” trees.

Upon returning we brainstormed ideas for the app with storyboards.

While this project was more an exercise in creative expression, it was definitely informed by our experience of the high desert.

I designed the main menu screen that used an old knob-turn television as the backdrop and the story timeline.
