Coronavirus cases currently stand at over 120,000 worldwide. Recently declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are preventative measures that we can all take to stay safe.

Symptoms of coronavirus

The symptoms of coronavirus, according to the NHS are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

During day-to-day activities, you can take the following measures to prevent infection. The below are in accordance with WHO guidelines:

  • Clean the hands regularly with an alcohol-based sanitizer, or wash them with soap and water. The CDC also make this recommendation, advising that sanitizer should contain “at least 60% alcohol” and that people should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds.
  • Clean surfaces regularly with disinfectant.
  • Avoid crowded areas when going out.
  • Try to avoid close contact with people who display flu-like symptoms, including coughing and sneezing.
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
