PDX Tax March Demands Trump Release His Returns
On Saturday, over a thousand of your neighbors gathered in downtown Portland to demand President Trump release his tax returns. The march was part of a worldwide call to action, with hundreds of thousands of people across the globe raising their voices in unison. At Terry Schrunk Plaza, a crowd of over 1,000 Oregonians spilled onto the streets for the kickoff rally. Once the march started, the parade of protesters lasted more than eight city blocks, according to onlookers.
If you listen to our president’s ramblings or suffer from information overload — what I’ve taken to calling “propaganda mind” — you might wonder why your neighbors continue to fight for Trump’s tax returns. Here’s a brief refresher:
- Follow the Money
President Trump needs to prove who he works for. This past week, The Washington Post reported that the FBI had obtained a FISA warrant on Trump campaign advisor Carter Page to investigate the communications between Russia and the campaign. While it isn’t the first time this has been reported or even the most shocking twist thus far, it is the latest bombshell in the ongoing shady saga. By releasing his tax returns, Trump could put this issue to rest. Instead, he continues his smear campaign against protesters. The tax return issue is not being brought up “again.” It’s never gone away. And it won’t go away until he releases them. - Prove That We Care
During the campaign, Trump refused to release his tax returns. The story evolved over the course of his campaign. First he stated he had no objection to releasing his returns; then he said he would release them when Hilary released her emails; then he said his team was working on it; finally he said he was under audit. By his inauguration, his story became that Americans don’t care about his returns. Don’t let the sleight of hand fool you. Americans care. Your neighbors are taking to the streets. - Demand Transparency
At the first debate, then-candidate Trump told Hillary Clinton that if he didn’t pay federal taxes, that would make him smart. And yes — there are loopholes that allow for real estate professionals to avoid paying taxes. Trump blamed Clinton and Washington politicians for creating a system he could manipulate, but without seeing his tax returns, we don’t know the truth. Is he hiding that he hasn’t paid his taxes? Is he hiding his lack of wealth? Is he hiding his Russian business contacts? Americans deserve to know.
The demand for Trump’s tax returns is a demand for the truth. This weekend, the PDX Tax March joined 200 cities worldwide to let Trump know that this issue isn’t going away. We can maintain the pressure as long as it takes.
