All you had to say …

Was really so simple

& needn’t be eloquent

& all wordy & such,

just a quiet sincere

thankyou from the nation

for a young life given,

a young life lost,

& a personal word or two

such as “I hear your son

cycled to work at Walgreens

every day before signing up”

& perhaps “He was working hard at

making something of himself

for his loving wife & growing

youngsters & the child soon

to be” …

nothing too fancy really,

just a respectful & sincere

acknowledgement of dignity,

self-worth & service to one’s

not so hard

to share

with a young

& grieving widow.

Rest in Peace.
