You say your name is Chicano,
chico plano, plain boy
playing soldier living war
wearing glasses to cover
black eyes bloody veins
speaking low so
the cops can’t find you,
watching friends
getting beat,
eating nothing
at home,
trading bones for bread,
where’s your cause, chico boy?
underfunded education
dirty water sick father
pushed and called a border crosser
where does your anger go?
Cause they put you in the back
of the class, they call you stupid
for speaking Spanish,
labeled you “at risk”
and ignored you ever since

and yet you still resist.
