Gather

on hope after RBG’s death

From the author’s garden

Shock of cold received in the night,
gather courage now to store for tomorrow.
Its golden promise shines in the mind
like the hearts of butternuts in the garden.
Go out now and bear the spines —
leave gloves behind; feel necessary pain —
Cut a good stem to preserve the sweetness
of the summer sun’s love stored for winter.

Give yourself a moment-hour-day or two
for counting up the goodness of your life —
Then, knowing Life and Love grow by sharing,
pass the goodness you can to others so,
When they slice your offerings open,
they can eat the golden heart of courage —
We will walk together through the blasted garden
to replant, grow and share a kinder world.
