Much More Work

To be wanted is
Much more work
Than kicking back in the
BarcaLounger of a rigged a system
With quiet dependents to bring
Your slippers.

And you fear,
If you’re not needed,
Who will want you.

That depends on you.

And that’s the problem,
Isn’t it?

To be loved requires
Much more work
Than toiling at a mill to
Bring bacon to kenneled creatures
You’ve kept from hunting
For themselves.

What are the implications of a society in which women earn more than men? … If men aren’t breadwinners, will women regard them as economically expendable? — Stephen Moore, 2014
