Though it’s intermission,
I can still hear the singing —
darker singing —
steamboat-strong —
singing as strong as
mechanics’ hands, unwashed.

The singing grows stronger —
each measure belongs,
sewing up tattered seams —
how beautiful in this company!

A beam of sun — the singing cuts
open the day into a delicious tomorrow

and I come ready to eat.
I dare to sing
the varied songs.

I made this poem using a “cut-up poem” method from Walt Whitman’s “I Hear America Singing” and Langston Hughes’s “I, Too.” If you’re stuck at home (or looking for a fun educational activity) and want a simple, inspirational, creative activity, making cut-up poems is a great way to keep those writing muscles

My name anagrams to “a man becomes.” I love movies and Kurt Vonnegut. I don’t understand how anagrams work.
