Self-Evident Truth

Two hundred years after the Declaration
that all men are equal, we the nation
were told by politicos wrapped in red, white and blue
that trickle-down economics would get us through.

Self-evident truth now is we’re a land of two classes:
the tax privileged rich and the trickled-on masses.
Someday the tricklers will raise wages, we’re told,
but for thirty years it’s been yellow not gold.

Tax breaks pay for themselves, they claim
as they plan to cut Medicare without shame.
“We can’t afford entitlements the masses paid for!”
We have a deficit!” And the tricklers want more.

A trillion in deficit, trillions in profits.
The strategy now is to change the topics:
refugees, fake news, extremists are all
scapegoats, distractions from the tricklers’ huge haul.
