Sitting under a tree in Autumn

Four late hot days, heat starts to rise

early morning while I’m out walking.

I like sitting in the shade of a Red Oak,

a young tree hardly grown but tall,

and will still be growing many years

after I have left this earth and its troubles.

The leaves still green have lost their vigour,

in a few weeks they’ll fall, a blaze of red,

dry and clattering at the barest touch of a breeze

I think there’s a beauty in the bare tree.

when the leaves have fallen they’ll lie

covering the roots, to feed the waiting soil.

A light rain falling, the leaves sheen returns,

for just awhile, for just a day or two longer.

I like sitting in the Ynysangharad Peoples War Memorial Park — originally it was the gardens of a large private house…
