Spring, not Winter, is the hungry season.
When robins dogfight over nesting sites,
The sun grows warm as freezers start to empty
On evenings without artificial lights.
Resisting peashoots, letting chard grow bigger
Instead of gratifying hunger’s pains
Eventually rewards us with abundance
If we’ll wait past hot sunny days and rains.
Our homegrown crops require no transporting –
No petrochemicals at all they need,
Just careful eyes, some tending and some weeding
To grow amazing bounty from small seeds.
All hungry can be fed from Nature’s hand
If we would just learn how to tend our land.
