Steady State

You’re doing it for the children,
You tell us,
Tell yourself.
Buffering his rages.
What would become of them
If you left?

It could be so much worse
If you
Named madness,
Called the authorities.
What if
It didn’t work?
They didn’t believe you?
Sided with him?

Its warmer on the inside
With the checkbook and
The hope tomorrow will be better.
He’ll sober up.
You’ll squirrel away a nest egg.
The children will graduate.
Maybe he’ll die.
It happens.

Then you can get on with your life
Like it was all a bad dream,
Instead of creating a fuss
That could
End you,
Leave you in the cold,
Powerless,
Empty handed,
Turn the children against you.

There’s comfort to be had
In a steady state.

Least that’s what you tell us.
