Unicorns
A poem for science.
(Note to readers: Gladiolus flowers symbolize moral integrity and strength of character. The word ‘unicorn’ is also used symbolically as a make-believe animal; no disrespect is intended towards other types of unicorns).
The unicorns got into the garden
again last night.
They ate the gladiolas -
no fence can keep them out.
In the old days of our country,
there was a bounty on unicorns.
Unicorns were easier to shoot down
when they were only created by
hucksters and loud mouths
who had no power
back then.
But once the taboos
on magical construction lifted,
we shifted our perceptions.
Now, as truth hits a new low,
belief in unicorns has taken over
as the only way to go.
Today our leaders give
unicorns protected status
to eat our gladiolas,
because why should we care
about a flower
or our planet
when we
have unicorns?
