Meet the Mentor: Brian Hyland

This is part of a series of articles profiling some of the mentors, investors, and subject matter experts who form part of the Accelerate Green ecosystem. As Ireland’s only sustainability scaling accelerator programme, we believe that it’s critical to surround our business leaders with the right advice, at the right time.

This article profiles Brian Hyland, who will support the Accelerate Green cohort during the “Corporate Finance and Investment” module. For more details on the Accelerate Green programme, see our website at https://accelerategreen.ie/ — the application deadline is December 10th!

Professional Background

A finance expert, Brian spent almost three decades with RSM, one of the top ten accountancy firms in the world. In recent years, he left the company to pursue his personal business venture, Alpine Financial Consultancy. A fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland, his roles transformed over time from partner to consultant, including being involved in a merger, so he has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in both business and finance to bring to the table. Some of the areas he specialises in include corporate finance, expert witness and debt restructuring.

Green Experience

The Dublin native has spent nearly twenty years involved in the renewable energy space and has worked with various clients both nationally and internationally. He sat on a related committee for the British and Irish Chamber of Commerce, and one of his current clients is a pioneer in this space.

Brian’s other green credentials include working with Klir, software for water utilities, and is chair of Borrisoleigh Bottling Ltd. in Co. Tipperary who focus on natural water in biodegradable packaging. He also works with Mossfield Organic Farm in Co. Offaly who provide organic chemical-free yoghurt, cheese and milk.

Hopes for the Programme

When it comes to his aspirations for Accelerate Green, it aligns with his continued efforts for impactful environmental and sustainability outcomes. “I’d like to see real tangible and measurable ways in which we could show that this programme has improved the opportunities for Ireland to become a greener country and carbon zero if we can.”

What to Expect

As their mentor, Brian intends to focus his support on keeping successful applicants grounded and on track with their business objectives. “The basic challenge for most SME companies is funding. Most SMEs find they have a plan, but sometimes that plan isn’t properly documented or costed. My plan is to ensure people have a plan and it’s regularly visited and properly costed.”

Advice for Applicants

Brian encourages prospective applicants to apply early, and everyone should apply regardless of their business phase, or even if they think they may not qualify. “If you have within your governance and leadership team a philosophy of wanting to change your business model or increase your awareness within your team of how you could make a difference, then I suspect you are the right people.”
