How I Am Raising A Feminist Brother
And more importantly, why it matters to me.
This isn’t just a story about my brother.
This is about all the sons, brothers, and men we are raising in our homes right now — and the kind of future we are creating with them.
As a woman growing up in India, I have witnessed gender inequality in almost every corner of my life, and I made a quiet promise to myself that I wouldn’t stay silent and I wouldn’t let the next generation repeat the same mistakes.
The Society I Grew Up In
Growing up in India, I witnessed discrimination against women almost everywhere — at home, in the neighbourhood, in school, in college, and even in the workplace.
Women around me (including myself) in India are worshipped as a form of Goddess and are also often told NOT to:
- Have too many male friends
- Stay out late or party “too much”
- Wear what we want to (without judgment)
- Speak too loudly or too freely
- Prioritise career over family or household chores
- Live independently or move to cities alone
