Begi; town in West Ethiopia

An improvised explosive device buried on the road between the town of Begi (Oromia) and the town of Tongo (Beneshangul-Gumuz) destroyed a bus killing ten of its passengers and injuring many more.

The explosion took place on December 18th, 2018, a day after federal military units had left the area after having camped there. Addisu Arega, Oromo Democratic Party official, blamed the attack on “terrorists” but did not elaborate any further.

Speaking through the organization’s radio station, the Oromo Liberation Front denied responsibility and blamed the federal military. It claims eyewitnesses saw the federal troops burying the explosive before breaking camp and leaving the area.

This latest unexplained attack serves to further increase tensions between the Oromo Liberation Front and the ruling Oromo Democratic Party. Disagreements on how to implement the peace accord between the two parties has led to a breakdown in relations with both sides pointing fingers to each other.
