Two civilians shot in Nekemte by federal army
December 28th, 2018 — Two civilians were shot by federal soldiers in Nekemte, capital of East Wallagga, on Thursday as the national army continued its counterinsurgency campaign against Oromo Liberation Army units in the region.
According to residents, federal forces entered a hotel without warning and shot two civilians, killing one and injuring the other.
Our eyewitness source stated:
“I was standing at the bus station when I heard someone shout that the military was coming. Everyone began to run and hide wherever they could. Some entered people’s houses, others ran into restaurants and hotels. My friends and I ran into a hotel. The soldiers jumped out of their vehicle and began looking around. Some of them entered the hotel and shot a fair-skinned man who died at the spot. They also shot one of my friends in his leg. After the soldiers left, we quickly put the killed boy’s body on a truck and took our injured friend to the hospital on a motor bike.” — Barisoo, Nekemte resident
The Nekemte Referral Hospital confirmed that a civilian had been shot dead while another had been injured. Doctors’ stated that the killed victim had been shot in the chest.
