Thank you to all the retailers who joined us this year at NAEM’s EHS & Sustainability Management Forum. The event is off to a great start, and we’re excited about all of the content to come in the next few days.

RILA held their Fall Retail Environmental Compliance committee meeting ahead of the Forum on October 24. The event brings leading environmental compliance professionals from retail companies together for benchmarking, networking, and best practice discussions.

NAEM Executive Director Carol Singer Neuvelt opens the 2017 Forum

The 2017 NAEM EHS & Sustainability Management Forum opened with a warm welcome from Executive Director Carol Singer Neuvelt. Neuvelt noted the excitement surrounding the event, now in it’s 25th year, and thanked attendees, sponsors, and partners for their help in making the Forum come together.

The CRC Lounge provides a place for attendees to learn more about the resources we offer for retailers, meet the CRC team, relax and charge up your devices.

In the breakout session, Measuring the Value of your EHS Management System, environmental management professionals from Meijer, Duke Energy, United Technologies Corp., and Parker Hannifin Corp. shared best practices in implementing and evaluating EHS management systems, and common industry challenges in this area.

Panel on Delivering More Value with Fewer Resources

Amy Ebersole-Martinez from Petco Animal Supplies joined Mike Miller, Vice President, Risk Management & Safety, Advance Auto Parts, Kris Morico, Global Leaders, Environmental Programs, General Electric, and Monica Alston, Director EHS & Customer Experience Lead, Comcast to panel a session on Delivering More Value with Fewer Resources. EHS and sustainability professionals across industries, including retail, often share the challenge of limited time, money, and other resources; in this frank discussion, the group talked about keeping up with the pace of change in the industry and leveraging these resource challenges as opportunities for creative solutions.

In the afternoon, CRC Executive Director Tiffin Shewmake participated in a panel, Drones, Artificial Intelligence, and Internet of Things: Leveraging Technology to Advance EHS, with Allen Stegman, General Director, Environmental and Hazardous Materials, The BNSF Railway Co., and Kristen Duda, Vice President of Strategic Alliances, Intelex Technologies Inc. Tiffin shared how advanced technology like artificial intelligence is transforming the way businesses think about compliance, and provided insight on the developments underway at the CRC to help retailers incorporate these innovations.

The session Supply Chain Transparency: Key Challenges for Retailers and Product Manufacturers brought together EHS professionals across the supply chain, including ingredient manufacturers, suppliers of consumer products, wholesalers, and retailers. The group, which included Wendy Brant, Senior Director, Environmental, Health and Safety Compliance, Walmart, Michael Hewett, Director, Publix, Dee O’Reilly, Assistant Vice President, L’Oreal, and David Dilk, Senior Regulatory Affairs Expert, Givaudan Fragrances, discussed the drivers for transparency along the supply chain, and the challenges they face as an industry.
