#BigParentingIdea — Adult People Don’t Need Guardians. They Just Need Parents.

The religion.

Do they have the same beliefs as we do? Do they pray/ go to church?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

The job/ career.

Is it a “practical” major? Is it a real job?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

The political views.

Do they have the same opinions as we do? Do they vote for the same party?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

Things to care about.

Do they care about the right things?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

People to hang out with.

Do they hang out with the right people?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

Values to live by.

Do they live by the same values we do?

Yes or no? WTF happened? Where did we make a mistake?

On and on and on.

We spend so much time being guardians of those adults that were once small and helpless human beings that we actually have no time left in which to just be their parents.

Adult people don’t need guardians who constantly tell them how to live, or whether what they do is right or wrong.

They just need parents. Good, loving, nonjudgmental human beings who will always be there for them, no matter what they believe, what career they pursue, what their political views are, what they care about, who they hang out with, what values they live by, or how they dress, whom they have sex with and what lifestyle they have.

We ask ourselves Where did we make a mistake?, because we don’t see the outcomes we would like to see. And that’s exactly where we make a mistake.
