#BigParentingIdea — What Are The 20s For?

As our children approach their 20s there is this expectation that they will choose something. Lawyer, doctor, engineer — something. Then there is this expectation that they will graduate from college and start a career in a chosen field.

Because I was brainwashed by the society at large that that’s the way young people should approach their 20s, that focusing on this one thing is everything and that those who don’t know exactly what they want to do in their lives will soon be left behind, I stuck with this random choice of mine for 10+ years.

I locked myself up mentally in the idea that I’ll become a lawyer and never in my five years of law school did I once asked myself “Was it a good choice? How will I know if being a lawyer is something that I’ll enjoy? How could I find out if it’s something I’ll enjoy doing in my adult life without having to spend five years or more (!) on laborious studies?”

I asked none of those questions. All I and all my peers asked was “What is the next subject in our curriculum?” and “How much time do we have to prepare for the next exam?”

That was all we needed to know.

After 10+ years of getting legal education and going through apprenticeship I stepped off the legal path because it was not what I wanted for myself (I did it when I was one last step from becoming an attorney).

Today I know that our 20s are not for locking ourselves up in this one career for a lifetime. Especially if it’s a career that you have chosen as a teenager or on the basis of your education that we so often pick randomly also in our teenage years.

As a parent you need to understand this. This is superimportant!

In this short video Gary Vaynerchuk tells you exactly what those years are for. Gary HELP!!!

Do your kids a huge favor and explain to them what their 20s are really for!

Or at least stop telling them this bullshit that as they approach their 20s they should decide on this one thing, practically without trying anything, and that focusing on this one thing is everything and that those who don’t know exactly what they want to do in their lives will soon be left behind. That simply isn’t true. That’s ridiculous!
