A Unified Future: The Role of AI and Emotional Intelligence in Reforming Healthcare

Made with AI — Salim Afshar

For as long as we have practiced medicine, the foundational principle has been “do no harm”. Every intervention, every potential treatment, is scrutinized under this lens. And yet, there exists an irrational disparity in our practice. On a pedestal of perfection, we judge our actions, all the while ignoring the everyday errors that plague our industry, equivalent to a jumbo jet full of casualties every day.

Medical errors, unfortunately, are only the tip of the iceberg. In a world where access to medical care is unequal, the disparity between the haves and the have-nots exacerbates suffering. We sit in the midst of this crisis, still erring, still perpetuating harm and pain, ignoring the potential of transformative tools like artificial intelligence (AI) out of fear. Our perfectionist stance serves more as an inhibitor than a facilitator of progress.

The question we must ponder upon is not whether AI is the solution, but how we can reshape our world where technology complements and augments our reality, rather than threatening it. The failings of our healthcare system are not a product of lack of intelligence, but rather an ignored spiritual underpinning.

We must confront the uncomfortable truth that our healthcare industry profits from sickness. Despite our talk of value-based healthcare and wellness, the system is fundamentally built to favor financial growth. Our collective failure lies in our inability to apply emotional and spiritual intelligence at a systems level. While individual practitioners may be compassionate, empathetic, and intuitive, the system prioritizes metrics that drive material growth.

To genuinely rectify these faults, we must first engage in introspective reflection and candid discussion. This dialogue will lead to unity of thought, that ultimately will drive us toward a unified vision. This vision is then what drives our unified action — actions that become a part of a new culture within the healthcare system. When we intertwine this evolved culture and mindset with a deep comprehension of our existing system, we pave the way for creating governance mechanisms that aptly harness powerful tools like AI — enabling us to design the governance required to drive innovation and wield tools like AI effectively, for the betterment of the patients we serve and society at large.

Without acknowledging and rectifying this fundamental need, we risk falling prey to the forces of greed and competition. We risk turning AI into a weapon, an element in an escalating arms race with unintended consequences, exacerbating and amplifying the suffering of those we are meant to serve.

It is essential that we remember that AI, like any tool, is only as good as the hands that wield it. We must ensure these hands are guided not just by clinical knowledge, but by a deep-seated understanding of the spiritual and emotional needs of the patients they serve. Only then can we truly fulfill our oath to “do no harm”. Only then can we move towards a unified future, harnessing the power of technology for the collective good of humanity.
