The Monster in the Mirror
They say our eyes are the gateway to the soul,
That our face can show who we really are.
While others can see our face every day,
To view our own face, a mirror is the only way.
Two brothers, both twins, stand at a sink,
A mirror before each boy.
What reflects is the same frightening scene.
One boy remains stoic; the other begins to scream.
A hideous monster grits his teeth at the youths,
Cackling as he tells them forbidden truths.
“You lack respect, you lack empathy, you lack common sense!”
One boy acknowledges this; the other begins his defense.
“I know this is me, but I know I can improve,”
The first boy says as he begins to move.
“I don’t believe this, it’s all a lie!”
The second boy shouts as he begins to cry.
One brother, all alone, stands at a sink,
A shattered mirror next to one intact.
Nothing reflects in the broken mirror.
Yet the second boy knows, deep down, his monster appears clearer.
