Even before the pandemic hit, the problems were clear: the climate emergency; the stagnation of our schools; a health system already buckling under stress; opaque financial systems that left too many behind. And then came Covid-19, the fuel on the fire, the final wake-up call that we simply cannot continue this way.

Addressing these challenges will require us all — and even then, we may not be able to do it fast enough. Some claim that the global warming ship has sailed; others talk about “lost generations” who will never escape the cycle of debt or gain the requisite skills for today’s digital age. We believe there’s still a window to get us onto a much better track — but the only way to do so quickly enough is through breakthroughs in system-relevant technology and entrepreneurship.

Against this background, we’re extremely proud to announce Revent — an early-stage European VC fund that doesn’t just ask “how big will this company get,” but also asks if it’s doing something of fundamental importance to our planet and our society. It’s a fund made for the challenges of our time, a fund that believes that there’s never been a better or more important time to build a tech company that tackles the biggest challenges in climate, health, education, and finance head-on.

The economic opportunity here is also clear: by addressing large problems that truly matter, these companies are exceptionally well-positioned to become very valuable. There’s no trade-off here; outsized returns will be generated specifically because the business is advancing society and protecting our planet. With the tailwinds of increasingly conscious consumers, changing government regulation, and a new generation of talent asking for meaning in their work, entrepreneurs looking to build with purpose suddenly have an unfair advantage.

Nonetheless, there are still surprisingly few venture funds specifically dedicated to these founders. We’re here to change this. We’ve started Revent to build a home for those tackling these challenges; a partner who fully shares the founders’ expanded vision of success. We invest early because the ideas that get seeded today will determine how well our world is doing tomorrow — and because we want to be there, side-by-side, through those toughest earliest days.

We believe strongly in the value of diverse backgrounds and perspectives and reflect this in our team and in how we make decisions. Standing alongside us is a community of top investors, operators, and scientists who’ve joined our mission and share our core belief: that the thoughtful application of breakthrough technology can make for a healthier, more sustainable, and equitable future.

Is this the decade when we’ll finally see step-change improvements in the health of our planet and our society? We think so — and for all of our sake, we need to be right. There’s no time to waste. Let’s get going.
