Price

Echo Dot (2nd gen) — $40

Echo (2nd gen) — $100

Echo Dot (3rd gen) — $50

Amazon also has the Echo Show, Spot, and Input. All of these variations have different capabilities. If you are interested in purchasing an Echo product make sure that you look into all of the options and consider the functionality that you are looking for. The Dot is a great option if you want a small product that can easily be tucked away or transported. The Echo Show is great if you want visual information.

My Experience

Pros

  • Information on command
  • Fairly decent speakers
  • Travels well
  • Program to control things around the house

Cons

  • Can be really touchy with words that sound like “Alexa”
  • Need other accessories to control appliances
  • Not as developed as the Echo

My Echo Dot has traveled across the country several times and it is the staple of my room. I can get the weather, news updates, and play music all from this small speaker. I also had my Echo Dot programed to turn off the lamp in my dorm room. This enabled me to get up into my bunk bed with the lights on and I could simply say “Alexa, turn of lamp” and the light would shut off. There are times that Alexa will turn on when anything similar to “Alexa is said”. You can change her trigger word to Echo or Amazon though.

My Recommendation

I would definitely recommend an Echo Dot. Even as a speaker, I love my Dot. I use it at least once a day for music, weather, news, or even timers. Honestly, my life would be a little more hectic without my Dot. Well worth the $40! Also, if you wait until Amazon’s prime days to purchase any Echo product, you can get one for 50% off :)
