The Dell XPS 13 laptop is one of Dell’s newest editions to the laptop family. As an owner of one, it can be said that the graphics are above average at any rate, the screen is very sleek looking, it’s high performance for PC gaming, and it doubles as a touch screen. For the most part, the XPS 13 laptop is a well-rounded piece of technology. However, it does have its shortcomings.

We will be covering everything that the Dell XPS 13 laptop has to offer, and more.

The Basics

Here are some of the bare essentials (found via Spec Sheet on techradar.com).

  • CPU — 1.8GHz Intel Core i7–8550U (quad-core, 8MB cache, up to 4.0GHz)
  • Graphics — Intel UHD Graphics 620
  • Screen — 13.3 inch, Ultra HD (3,840 x 2,160) UltraSharp InfinityEdge touch display
  • Storage — 1TB PCIe SSD
  • Connectivity — Killer 1435 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1
  • Camera — Widescreen HD (720p) webcam with 4 array digital microphones
  • Weight — 2.67 pounds (1.21kg)
  • Size — 11.9 x 7.8 x 0.3–0.46 inches (3.02 x 1.99 x 0.78–1.16cm; W x D x H)
  • Price —$1,949.99, but can be purchased for less from other sites/stores such as Micro Center, Best Buy, or Walmart. For instance, depending on your location, you could get a Dell XPS for around $900 at Walmart or $1,500 at Best Buy. Of course, this also depends on certain attributes you may or may not want with the laptop, like Touch or Non-Touch.

Cons

  • Expensive
  • White color option is even more expensive
  • Webcam position isn’t in best location; it is positioned towards the left at the bottom of the screen instead of at the center of the computer at the top, which can make video calls a little awkward
  • Battery life needs more improvement
  • Design hasn’t changed much upon upgrade, though for those who don’t like change, this could be a pro

Pros

  • 4K display
  • Facial recognition
  • Touch screen
  • Battery life is good considering 4K display; it can last several hours, maybe around 7 hours depending on what the computer has to run for programs
  • Good amount of storage

Personal Rendition

As an owner of the Dell XPS, the biggest issues I really have with it is the camera location and how easily the screen cracked. If you would to purchase this laptop, I highly recommend you place it in a computer sleeve and place it somewhere safe and not in a backpack with folders and a few books. Having possessed a huge Toshiba laptop in the past, I probably could’ve chucked my old computer off the deck of my house and it would still work. This couldn’t be farther from the truth with this computer. I was very displeased that it got a hairline crack on the screen after putting it into my book bag.

Still, despite these frustrations, this laptop if pretty much a jack-of-all-trades. It has a beautiful 4K display that even my friends have admired, it has a good battery life for what I need, it can run PC games with pretty good ease, and considering how much I download on it, I think it has great storage. I certainly don’t miss how bulky and ridiculously heavy my old laptop was.

So all in all, I would give this computer a 7/10. Just be sure to be extra careful when bringing it from one place to another.
