On a recent trip to Walmart I saw Great Value brand Swiss Cheese. Normally, I purchase groceries at Hannaford’s but I needed cheese and happened to be at Walmart so here we are.

About the Product

Great Value Swiss Cheese comes in thinly sliced and regular versions- both in 8 ounce zip-lock sealed bags. The thinly sliced version has 21 slices per package and has a piece of wax paper between each slice of cheese, which is important because it makes individual slices easy to grab.

Pros

The packaging of this product is the best part and is very comparable to that of Hannaford- which also sells 8 ounce packages of thinly sliced Swiss.

The one flaw in the Walmart brand’s packaging is that the zip-lock doesn’t always seal- which can lead to your cheese drying out. But this is a common problem with these sorts of products.

Cons

The taste of the Great Value Swiss leaves something to be desired. Overall, it is too salty for a Swiss and lacks the creaminess or distinctive flavor that you are looking for. Compared to Hannaford brand or sliced cheese from the deli counter (land o’ lakes, boar’s head, etc)- this cheese is lacking. However, it makes decent sandwich cheese and has thin enough slices that the saltiness is not too overwhelming.

Where to buy and recommendation

This cheese can only be purchased in store. It sells for about $2 ($2.22) when I was there. This is a similar price the Hannaford brand and often deli counters have cheese for $3.50 a pound.

I would recommend buying the Hannaford brand or going to the deli counter yourself.
