1-Star People at the 4-Star Resort
Next time, we won’t book an “adults only” trip
Over the winter holidays, my husband’s family decided it would be a good idea to take a trip somewhere warm. After a bit of research (not enough, as it turns out…) we settled on an all-inclusive resort, the Riu Republica in Punta Cana.
Traveling with her grown children, their spouses, and her elderly mother, my mother-in-law chose the “adults only” resort hoping to avoid unruly, screaming children and in order to have a relaxed experience.
She envisioned sipping pina coladas by the pool, reading a novel under a palm tree, going on a day trip to swim with dolphins or snorkel in a reef, and walking along the beach at sunset in a floppy sunhat and flowing serape.
Instead, we found ourselves surrounded by rowdy, drunk college students walking around in g-string bikinis that left Nana shocked. By noon each day, the pools were full of frat guys throwing footballs at each others’ heads, “woo girls” screaming when a particular song was chosen by the incredibly loud DJ (who seemed to specialize in remixed electronica), and couples making out and grinding at the poolside bar.
