Is Bluesky Worth the Hype?
A review of Bluesky’s features, vibe, and potential as a platform
Bluesky’s userbase has recently jumped to over 20 million accounts. Predictably, it has had a few growing pains, but the app, touted as an alternative to the platform formerly known as Twitter, is doing better than anyone expected.
Like many Lefties, I finally made the switch after the US election. I tuned out of social media for a few days for my mental health, and during that break, realized that ex-Twitter was doing me more harm than good.
The constant bombardment of bots, racism, hate speech, porn, ads, and Bluechecks is exhausting, and the river of trash accelerated exponentially since new management took over the platform. The most recent move to neuter the block feature was the final straw for many.
Twitter used to be a good place. I remember when I first joined in 2011, when I was young and full of hope. The idea of a soapbox/microblogging platform was revolutionary. We got real, up-to-the-minute local and international news, discovered new artists, made friends, made jokes.
Bluesky makes me feel that way again.
