Artists Showcase: Everlasting Art — Panel Painting Artist Shanwen Chen
Shanwen Chen is a skillful and accomplished panel painting artist. His artworks are elegant and straightforward ancient wooden boards decorated with landscapes containing flowers, birds, mountains and rivers, or pavilions and towers. Many describe his creations as “Everlasting Art”.
Panel painting is also called ancient wood painting, which is an elegant, simple, and unique art form in China. The ancient wooden boards form a profound artistic effect that transmits simplicity and naturality.
“The purpose of art is to record what you think is beautiful.” — Shanwen Chen
Ancient wood painting is a relatively niche art form in China. Chen started learning this unique technique when he was in college with Ding Jianfa, an associate professor at Ningde University who holds several patents on ancient wood imitation technology. During his college days, the work “Four Screens of Lotus Flowers” produced by Chen Shanwen and Ding Jianfa won the 7th Fujian Province Arts and Crafts silver prize.
His works “Four Screens of Flowers and Birds” and “Hehe Meimei” won the bronze medal in the Putian competition, the highest level of Chinese arts and crafts, and the work “Foresight” won the Silver medal at the 6th Fujian Provincial Fine Arts and Crafts competition.
Chen is good at making detailed and meticulous depictions. Using the technique of positive engraving, the whole picture protrudes and is integrated with the bottom wood plate. It gives people a strong visual impact, demonstrating the elegant and straightforward, intriguing artistic effect, and satisfies at the same time the aesthetics of retro styles. Chen’s artworks have vivid characters, exquisite layouts, and magnificent colors. They have the aura of traditional Chinese painting and have a 3D effect beyond a regular painting and a beautiful texture.
Chen’s achievements in ancient wood painting art rely not only on the artistic value of his personal works but also on promoting the technological development of the entire ancient wood painting industry. He was able to artificially antique new wood boards in 5 to 8 days based on the natural growth ring texture in the wood. The effect is as natural as actual ancient wood boards due to preserving the natural ring texture; the antique effect of each ancient wood painting by Chen is unique and cannot be replicated.
Shanwen Chen’s artworks will soon be featured on Revival NFT Marketplace. Stay tuned!
