The Story of A Pandemic
Crowded by Edison Zhang expresses a common desire for all the people around the world in the age of COVID — the need to socialize.
The ravages of the COVID-19 virus have forced nations all over the world to curtail their citizens’ freedom. Never in world history has our freedom been so limited. To combat the pandemic, people have been required to stay at home, refrain from going out, and learn the new normal of social distancing. It’s really hard to think about being around and socialize with a big crowd again, to freely breathe the fresh air without face masks while we are outdoors.
Gradually, the bright, colorful life we once had became darkened, diluted, and faded into grey. Yet in our hearts, we still yearn for a free life full of colors — having a night out in a bar full of friends, taking a stroll in a busy shopping mall, or being a part of the Thanksgiving parade. We want to interact with other people, share our laughs and tears, and feel “Crowded”.
When creating this artwork, Edison Zhang immerses himself in a strong desire for freedom, restores the scenes that naturally appear in his heart, and uses bright paints and naturally rounded lines to show us a crowded and colorful world all dreamed of in an abstract way.
