“Surfing Sea Otter” is a work from Edison Zhang’s Endangered Species and will be the fourth NFT dropping on Revival NFT Marketplace.
Sea otters are the guardians of the balance of the marine ecosystem and live in the cold waters of the North Pacific for almost their entire lives. They can dive to a depth of 50 meters and sleep with seaweed on their bodies at night.
However, since the Russian sailors who reached Alaska in 1741 discovered sea otters and their precious fur, the sea otter population has suffered a dramatic decline due to human hunting activity in just 150 years.
An Artwork Raising Awareness of Endangered Sea Otters
“Surfing Sea Otter” is a work from Edison Zhang’s Endangered Species series. The sea otter is a marine mammal native to the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean coasts. The body of the otters is covered with dense fur with up to 125,000 hairs per square centimeter, with two exceptions: the tip of the nose and the soles of the feet. At the same time, there is a layer of fat on the fur, which is impermeable even in deep water. Although it can walk on land, the sea otter can live exclusively in the ocean and live in the sea for almost its entire life. They can dive to a depth of 50 meters and sleep with seaweed on their bodies at night.
Sea otters consume over 100 prey species, including sea urchins, crabs, clams, shrimps, and other animals, especially sea urchins, the number one seaweed killer. Kelp forests are known as “marine forests,” relying on photosynthesis to provide food and habitat for thousands of marine life. Thanks to the suppression of sea urchins by sea otters, the kelp forest is still well conserved and has thousands of marine life in the ecosystem. Sea otters are the guardians of the balance of the marine ecosystem.
However, since the Russian sailors who reached Alaska in 1741 discovered sea otters and their precious fur, the sea otter population has suffered a dramatic decrease due to human hunting activity in just 150 years. In 1911, fewer than 2,000 sea otters were recorded, and after the ongoing protection of the countries along the North Pacific, the sea otter population has recovered to more than 100,000. However, the sea otter population in southern Alaska and other locations has dropped sharply again after the recovery. The rapid deterioration of the ecosystem caused by crude oil leakage and environmental pollution are the main reasons.
At present, all subspecies of sea otters are included in the “IUCN red list”; the California ethnic group is listed as a “threatened species” in the US Endangered Species Act, and it was listed as a “depleted species” in the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1977.
As “WWF China Art Ambassador,” Edison Zhang hopes to appeal to everyone to protect sea otters through this work.
