A deeper look into Tang Sancai — Akhal-Teke, and the history behind it
What is Tang Sancai? In a sentence, Tang Sancai is a versatile type of decoration on ancient Chinese ceramics, typically those associated with the Tang Dynasty, using glazes, predominantly in the three colors of yellow, green, and creamy off-white.
The Tang Sancai glazed pottery is the treasure of ancient Chinese ceramic firing techniques. It is a kind of low-temperature glazed pottery popular in the Tang Dynasty. It was made by adding metallic oxides to the colored glaze and calcining the object to create different colors, namely the predominant yellow, green, and creamy off-white, hence the name “Sancai” (which means “three colors” in Chinese). The chemicals in the glaze change gradually in the firing process, creating a variegated effect with a majestic and elegant artistic attraction.
The Tang Sancai glazed pottery is a shining pearl among ancient Chinese ceramics, one of the most significant forms of Chinese art. It has a history of more than 1,400 years and was exported to foreign countries through the Silk Road in the early Tang, winning great favor for its bright colors and pleasing shapes. After the Tang Dynasty, Tang Sancai became a popular style in Japanese and other East Asian ceramic arts, after having widely influenced Islamic pottery.
Horses were one of the most common Tang Sancai glazed pottery figures. The accurately proportioned horse figures have fluid lines, natural expressions, and life-like movements. In Chinese culture, the horse is the symbol of “Vigor, fortune, and continuous life.” Akhal-Teke, a Turkmen horse breed, was imported to Ancient China and recognized as the fastest, most prestigious horse in the middle kingdom.
The artwork Tang Sancai — Akhal-Teke represents the marvelous culture of the Tang Dynasty of ancient China. It is a fusion of traditional and modern art, with unique stylized lines and pop elements based on the original Sancai colors.
“Ever since I was a child, I was fascinated by the rich and blooming culture of the Tang Dynasty.” Edison Zhang commented, “Tang Sancai Glazed Horse was one of the most exquisite products of that culture, which is also the source of inspiration for this NFT artwork I created.”
