MANIFEST stayontheground

COP21, COP22, COP23 … COP25 … since the first conference on climate change in Berlin in 1995, international meetings follow one another, the experts panic, the people become aware of what is at stake and every day we precipitates a little more towards the scenario of no return. The human species will have been able to save its banks but not its biotope.

The climate is warming, leading to the catastrophes we know and those, even bigger, tomorrow. That’s why we decide today to make a choice: we will not fly.

TO REDUCE OUR IMPACT ON CLIMATE

Transport is responsible for 20% of global CO2 emissions.
Reducing our use of transport means reducing the amount of CO2 we emit, a necessary condition to hope to limit global warming.
One km traveled by plane emits twice as much as a kilometer traveled alone by car. The gap is important but not huge. What makes all the difference is the distance of the trip. Nobody thinks to drive 12,000 kilometers to spend a week of vacation.
Each French emits 5 tons of CO2 per year. A return ticket Paris — New York emits 2.5 t per passenger. In other words: between a year of life in France (daily trips to work, heating, electricity consumption, food …) and a week’s vacation in Bali, my impact on global warming is strictly the same.
To stop taking a plane is to eliminate a huge cost for the climate.

TO BE COHERENT

Every day we make efforts to limit our environmental impact and reduce our carbon footprint. We carpool, we lower our heating, we isolate our homes, we replace our cars with electric bikes when we can.
All the efforts we make in a whole year are ruined when we board a plane for a long haul flight.
If we eat locally because a Kiwi New Zealand sold in France seems crazy, do not waste everything while flying to go on vacation.
To stop flying is to link our actions to our speeches.

TO INAUGURATE A NEW ERA

Eyes wide open, we declare today that teleporting in a few hours to a few thousand kilometers is a dream of the past. Tomorrow, it will be irresponsible.
We propose to rethink our relationship to elsewhere and to travel. The plane abolished the distances? Restore them. To the worship of speed we oppose the eulogy of slowness.
The time when the continent was changing the time of a holiday is over. Technology and commercial offer still allow it, but the reason now forbids it. Let’s travel close to home, here is an elsewhere like any other. And if we want to go further, take the time to go slowly, by bike, sailing or on foot.
To stop flying is to be visionary.
