This week you’ll find yourself alone at an impossible alpine height that seems to hover over the land. Other peaks tower around you, rising as you rise, ascending from a landscape you never knew had any mountains. No Virgil, and no Beatrice; just you alone on the mountain side, tired from the ascent and drinking the warm water from your Nalgene in the heavy close sun all the while feeling particularly there. Do you only have this kind of sentience, this dead-on view of your life-as-it-is in these moments of aloneness? Does it seem like you’re always waking up in some alien scenario, or that the only moment you remember in your life is this one: so aware of being so alone; your skin creeping over your body as if you were being lowered into a bath that is a tick or two too hot to be comfortable? It is equal parts your own brilliant arbitrage combined with a mundane and brutal destiny that has deposited you here in an overly obscure conceptual framework and no view of the summit for the low hanging clouds. The only way is up.
