Meet Steffen | Advanced Consultant IT
“So far I appreciated every project I have worked on… I was able to work with colleagues from India, from the US, from Poland, from Portugal or from different cities in Germany.”
As an Advanced Consultant IT, Steffen has many tasks and needs to maintain flexibility at work while also have a reasoned plan for the day. He prefers to work in the office to exchange ideas with his colleagues and have a shared work experience. Steffen’s hint to newbies at diconium: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help and to invite people for a coffee break. Be clear about your expectations and goals. Stay open minded for the things to come.”

Hello Steffen, how does a usual working day look for you?
This depends highly on the project and the current phase/task. Some of the reoccurring tasks include: writing concepts, preparing descriptions for developers, being in meetings to clarify topics together with stakeholders, making technical evaluations for upcoming topics. And of course, staying available for the team and the stakeholders.

And what is the most important skill needed in your job?
One of the most interesting parts of being an IT consultant is to be flexible.
You can make your plan for the day, but be prepared to deviate from it. The second really important part is being able to communicate in both directions. Seeing the technical side and being able to communicate it according to all stakeholders (also the other way round).

Reflecting on your past projects, which one sticks out for you and why?
Although it sounds cheesy, but so far I appreciated every project I have worked on. I guess this is mostly to the fact that each project was completely different. Also from a team members point I was able to work with colleagues from India, from the US, from Poland, from Portugal or from different cities in Germany.

The last two years turned our working life upside down. What have you learned about your preferred way of working since then?
While I also appreciate 1–2 days of home office, I found out that personally, I prefer the office environment. I like the discussions, the coffee breaks and in general the shared working experience. But the home office has also shown me another way to structure my workdays. It’s no longer a 9 to 5 job, but more of a decision, based on daily tasks, what to work on and when.

Imagine you really need to focus on one specific task. What do you do?
As mentioned, a part of my job is to be available for the internal team as well as the stakeholders. So if I really have to focus, I block the time and move it to a point in the day where the obstruction of the task is unlikely. If the task takes longer, then I also inform the team about me having to focus on a task. I’ve never experienced that the diconium colleagues didn’t respect this.
What is a digital champion for you?
“I guess the obvious part is that a digital champion excels in the work outcome.
But this comes with the responsibility of providing the members a way to develop their skills in a beneficial way for both sides. It’s a symbiosis.Furthermore, for a digital champion it becomes more important to integrate influences from the environment into the company structure, or DNA. As an example, the topics sustainability and ethics in all characteristics, have become essential.”
Why did you decide to join diconium?
I really liked the spectrum that diconium had to offer. On a business side, they have great customers with ambitious projects. While looking at the history, it showed that they always kept true with their core principles. And on a personal level it offers a lot of opportunities to grow and they truly care about the employees.
Last but not least, what advice would you give a new starter at diconium?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and to invite people for a coffee break. Be clear about your expectations and goals. Stay open minded for the things to come. You will see that your colleagues will try to help you.

You remember our four values? What do you connect with “collaboration”?
Being open and direct. Don’t set your opinion as the only way for addressing a topic. But at the same time, be honest about your opinion. The perfect collaboration can only happen if all sides addressed their opinion honest and to the point. From there on, all can collaborate towards the same goal.
