3 Signs That Your Crew Is Absolutely Rocking It

When it comes to looking for a place to eat and drink, I’m somewhat a creature of habit.

Don’t get me wrong. I love discovering new places, but there are a few hangouts that I go more often than others.

It’s not just about the food and drinks — it’s the people.

Your crew is the X-factor that creates special experiences and converts one-time customers to regulars, so more than ever, it’s important for owners and managers to hire right.

Here are 3 ways to know if you’ve got a rock star on your team:

1. They create personal connections

Whether it’s a bartender, service crew, barista, or others, your best front-of-house people make the effort to get to know customers and go out of the way to make them feel at home.

The art of conversation is a highly underrated skill, and your best people are insanely good at it. They address regulars by name, remember their usual orders (even the finicky ones), chat with them, and go the extra mile to show that they care.

It’s all in that simple genuine connection.

(Special shoutout to Marié from El Tardeo, Michael from Toby’s Estate, Kino and the Highball girls, and the folks at Free The Robot!)

2. They have a passion for your business

Enthusiasm is contagious.

If you’ve ever talked to someone who’s passionate about what they do, you know what I’m talking about. People who have a personal interest in your product are your best ambassadors. They get customers interested and excited, influence them to try your best products and keep them coming back for more.

A great example is Claudia from The Cheese Ark, who loves cheese more than hipsters love Instagram.

3. They have character and personality

Your best people are great team players and never shy away from hard work. At the same time, they have a sparkling personality that just shines through.

Just imagine: it’s the middle of a crazy service and your crew has to take orders, make and serve drinks, wash and dry glasses, check in and chat with customers — all with a smile on his or her face.

You want to hire people who can slough through the toughest parts of the job with a great attitude — now that’s an absolute rock star.
