I am excited to launch RG&CO today, providing technology consulting services for businesses ranging from established companies to emerging startups to guide, challenge, and advise them. To get stuck in with their technology strategy, architectural design and (personally, the most rewarding) helping to build and grow internal technology teams.
For any new enquiries on how RG&CO can help with your next technology challenge please contact hello [at] robgreen.co to start the conversation.
Building on some great experiences
It’s been an amazing roller coaster ride working in digital media, marketing and technology agencies for almost 20 years now. I’ve been lucky to work alongside so many talented people (and mentors), have travelled and met clients and teams around the world and been blessed with the opportunity to lead strong technology teams in the UK, Poland and India.
Clients across many industries have been open to both myself and the agencies I’ve worked for in this time, enabling us to deliver the best possible digital products and services on their behalf by sharing insights on not only how they work but how their wider industry functions; if you’re hungry for knowledge this is a truly rewarding part of agency life.
It has always left my curiosity craving for more though. Well-established clients are generally focused on getting new and updated digital products or services to market and that’s where they focus their agency partnership.
Often you miss out on the growing pains that a client business goes through, or you aren’t around for the significant challenges they face. Some clients even change digital agencies frequently enough that you may not get to see whether your work is successful, or learn how it could have been improved.
I don’t want to abandon working for digital agencies altogether, but want to explore opportunities where I can work directly with and build partnerships with businesses of all sizes, and focus on what I do well.
Truthfully it’s a scary move coming from a background of permanent roles, but there is strength to be found in the movement towards people building their own brands, working as a network with others, and the rise of the gig economy — whilst I don’t believe it’s all romantic and magical, there is something special about choosing to solve challenges that interest you, with talented people, and most importantly that you can add some actual value to.
Choosing a name with some room to collaborate
On day one it’s only going to be me and my experience that I have to provide, but it’s good to have ambitions about the future and the ‘&CO’ is the intention to make something bigger out of this — whether it be to build a company, a team of collaborators, to launch a cohort — whatever it takes to find some like-minded people that just want to do good work.
It’d be a real stretch to start assembling a team in these early days but I’m excited at the possibility of getting back in touch with people that I’ve collaborated with in the past and solving some new challenges together.
Thanks have to go to Emma Bathgate though who as the first ex-colleague and collaborator has helped to shape and design the branding of RG&CO and acted as a fantastic and challenging sounding board for purpose and tone.
Setting off on the new journey
To start with, the goal is to help businesses that are looking to fill interim technology leadership requirements (CTO, Head of Technology, Technical Director); if they need help solving a specific challenge, filling a gap, building a team, hiring a future leader or supporting an existing technology leader.
Initially I’m only considering part-time roles, which keeps me focused, lowers costs for clients (especially for small businesses) and leaves me some time free for entrepreneurial adventures as well as research and staying fresh.
I’d love to work with some of the talented people that I’ve already met, but I’m just as excited about the prospect of meeting new faces and getting stuck into new challenges outside of my comfort zone.
