Short North Series Part 2

In this series, join us as we explore Columbus’ most vibrant neighborhood, the Short North. In five segments, we’ll introduce you to the series and then detail the neighborhood’s surprising history, world-class arts and culture scene, stellar lineup of events, and unparalleled dining and drinking options. A packed lineup of festivals, concerts and parades really adds to the Short North’s day-to-day vibrancy.

Whether it’s casually strolling High Street for the monthly Gallery Hop or getting wild for the Doo Dah Parade, there’s something for everyone. This events-focused edition of the Short North Series will help you mark your calendar for all the action this summer.

Recurring

  • Gallery Hop: On the first Saturday of every month, thousands of people flock to the Short North for new gallery exhibitions, street performers, special events, food and drinks. On nice days, it’s practically shoulder to shoulder down High Street. Gallery Hop runs 4–10 pm, with many restaurants and bars staying open much later.
  • Guided Art Talk: Explore the art, history and architecture of with guided tours of the Short North running on Mondays between July 20 and August 31. Or for the truly adventurous at heart, go on a self-guided Art Walk by downloading a walking map and using an audio guide to liven the maps and key features.
  • Goodale Park Music Series: Created to promote community and diversity while celebrating local musicians and Goodale Park, this family-friendly music series is held on Sundays for six weeks of July and August. A variety of local food carts will be set up for the events. Acts include Kelly Zullo, The Devil Doves, George Barrie Band, Fool’s Fire, TATTAT and Parker Louis.
  • North Market Farmers’ Market: One of the oldest and largest farmers’ markets in central Ohio, the North Market Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday (8 am - 1pm) and Sunday (11 am - 4pm) from June through October.
  • Night Market: Stroll the North Market during summer nights, from 6–9 pm. This year’s dates are July 20, August 17 and September 21.

June

  • Origins Game Fair | June 12–16 | Greater Columbus Convention Center: This annual tabletop gaming convention is being held for a 45th year. There are more than 6,000 gaming events scheduled throughout the week, along with a variety of other activities, including a film festival and comedy and music shows.
  • Columbus Young Professionals Club: Entrepreneurs and Innovators | June 12 | North High Brewing: This CYP Club event is an after-work series focused on entrepreneurship and innovation. Enjoy drinks from partner North High Brewing while establishing great connections with other young professionals, entrepreneurs and creatives. This month’s session features an interview with the co-founders of Acceptd, the world’s largest arts network and based in Columbus.
  • Pride Parade | June 15 | Short North: The Short North Arts District community continues is a key supporter of the Stonewall Columbus Pride Parade, with the parade extending along High Street from Goodale to 5th Avenue. Short North businesses open their doors early during this community-wide celebration. There is a Parade Step Off at 10:30 am at High and Poplar streets. This year’s Grand Marshall is Nina West, a fixture in Columbus’ LGBTQ community who recently appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
  • Comfest | June 28–30 | Goodale Park: A free non-corporate celebration of Columbus’ community organizations, performers, artists and volunteers. First held in 1972, this Community Festival is a “Party with a Purpose,” an artistic and political celebration of alternative culture. There are artists, activists and people looking for an all-around good time. Enjoy the artist displays, live music, food and drink vendors and some of the best people-watching to be found.

July

  • Red White & Boom | July 3 | Downtown: This annual Fourth of July celebration is centered downtown, with fireworks launched from near COSI, but some of the best times can be had in the Short North. Bars and restaurants in the Short North will be packed with revelers, as will Goodale Park, a prime spot for fireworks viewing. Considered the largest fireworks display in the Midwest, Red White & Boom will see an estimated 400,000 people converge in and around downtown.
  • Doo Dah Parade | July 4 | Short North: This Independence Day parade is known for satirical takes on social, political and civic issues. “Nothing and no one is safe from satire.” The Doo Dah parade is free to watch, and to march in, and no registration is required. There is an all-day free block party with live music.
  • Ohio Wine Festival | July 12–13| North Market: Sample wines from all over the state while enjoying entertainment and strolling the North Market during extended hours.

August

  • Flavored Nation | Aug. 24–25 | Greater Columbus Convention Center: Called “A taste of every state,” Flavored Nation features iconic dishes from every state in America. After the inaugural Flavored Nation event was held last year in Columbus, it is back with new twists. Tickets are $35, or $55 at the door.
  • Greek Festival | Aug. 30 — Sept. 2 | Greek Orthodox Cathedral: The 47th Annual Greek Festival will celebrate Greek heritage and traditions. Experience the culture and ancestry of Greece and the Orthodox Christian faith with music and dancing, food and drinks, art and retail, and more.
