RISD, First Responders Partner To Prepare

Richardson ISD, Richardson Police Department and the Richardson Fire Department recently partnered to hold a safety and security training exercise at Berkner High School, raising awareness and practicing protocols for active shooter situations.
This proactive approach to training was a direct result of the district’s “I Know What to do Day” that took place this past spring on all 55 campuses. The first-year program was implemented by the RISD Safety & Security Committee with the goal of ensuring that students and staff in all grade levels are prepared to react appropriately in any situation.

Training consisted of RPD and RFD leading informative discussions about active shooter situations, followed by a school shooting simulation and ended with a question and answer session. The simulation provided an opportunity for participants to see and experience how an active shooter situation might occur and provided a glimpse into how emergency personnel responds.
“Drills like this allow us to be prepared,” said Henry Hall, Berkner High School Principal. “If something ever were to happen, we will have had the training and awareness to know that we are ready, can maintain composure and have the confidence to do everything necessary to keep our students and staff safe.”
The emergency response drill is an example of the ongoing partnership between RISD and first responders. “With as many students and faculty that RISD has, it is almost like a small city within a city, so it is vital for us to have a good working relationship with them,” said Sgt. Kevin Perlich, Public Information Officer for the Richardson Police Department.

Active shooter situations are a major issue and it is important for everyone to be prepared. “The police department needs to know how the school district will respond and RISD needs to know the protocols that are in place with the first responders,” said Perlich. “It is one thing to talk about situations on paper, but it’s another thing to go through scenarios and actually see it play out. It gives participants a more realistic feel.”
The safety of RISD students and staff is a top priority for all and this relationship reflects that. “As we review and prepare our individual school emergency operations plans, partnerships and information like this from our first responders is invaluable,” said Hall. “It is also an excellent reminder for our students that everyone prioritizes their safety.”
For years, RISD has operated with districtwide and school-specific emergency operations plans covering topics ranging from bus accidents to power outages. As the district prepares to begin the 2018–19 school year, campus administration and staff are taking part in different training exercises, to reinforce and remind all involved of safety and security protocols.
RISD and our municipal first responders will continue to work closely to ensure the safety of students and staff.
