Join the Kids Teaching Kids 21 Day Challenge

The three-week challenge starts Oct. 7. Sponsored by Medical City Children’s Hospital, the challenge encourages everyone to eat healthier and be a super snacker.

This year, RISD is competing against Mesquite Independent School District. All RISD elementary students already received a recipe book full of healthy snacks and meals.

Parents and students must register by Oct. 7, then enter snacks and track progress online. In November, participants must complete a final survey sent by Medical City to the email provided at registration, and either RISD or Mesquite ISD will receive $12,000 for physical education supplies.

Join now and be a happy and proud parent as your child develops healthy eating habits and feels fantastic.

Board Districts 2, 4 and 5 To Vote Under New System

Starting with next month’s election, Richardson ISD Trustees will be chosen using a new system.

Now, only voters living in specific geographic areas of RISD (called board districts) can vote for candidates running in that district. On the Nov. 5 ballot, candidates are running in board districts 2, 4, and 5.

The new method of electing trustees has no impact at all on which school students attend. Attendance boundaries have remain unchanged. The five single-member board districts were formed earlier this year after careful consideration of numerous factors, including but not limited to traditional neighborhoods, school feeder patterns, demographic makeup via census data, and voting precincts.

New Twist for 2019 Spirit Run

The 10th annual RISD Spirit Run is Nov. 2 at Galatyn Park.

Early-bird registration continues through Oct. 11, and there’s always the sleep-in option.

The race benefits the Excellence in Education Foundation for Richardson ISD, which provides funding for programs that support excellence in teaching and high-achieving students, raises funds for the enrichment and innovations of teaching for all students, recognizes and rewards excellence in teaching and performance, and reinforces positive relations with the community.

This year, the Foundation partnered with Heroes in Disguise and The Gobble Hobble to offer “ The Richardson Challenge ,” which combines the three charitable races into one 5k. Those who choose to participate receive a challenge t-shirt and a special challenge medal from each race that will link together at the end to create one big medal.

Reminders

Connecting With School

RISD administration and individual schools regularly provide messages to parents of enrolled students with school information, important dates, reminders, and safety information. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure their child’s school has an up-to-date email address and a working, text-enabled phone number.

Questions?

Your child’s school is the best resource for questions about school schedules and operations.

Parents may also contact the main RISD switchboard at 469–593–0000 or email the district at risd@risd.org.

Volunteering in RISD

A new background check is required every school year for all volunteers at RISD schools.

Parents, grandparents and community members must be cleared prior to volunteering at school activities, so the beginning of the school year is the best time to complete that process.

Learn more about volunteer opportunities at RISD schools and submit information for a background check.
