The October theme for Live Wise Live Healthy is Dr ug and Violence Education and Prevention .
For 35 years, the National Family Partnership has sponsored an annual drug awareness campaign known as National Red Ribbon Week.
This year, the RISD Student Assistance Department will provide campuses with Red Ribbon Week kits from Oct. 23 through Oct. 31. The kits include prevention lessons, materials on this year’s theme and helpful ideas on presenting the information to students.
High School Peer Helpers and Peer Mediators will present to elementary campuses on refusal skills and healthy decision-making. Presentations on dating violence prevention, bullying and the dangers of drugs will be delivered at all junior high and high schools.
Richardson Read It
Drop everything, grab a book and read it Friday Oct. 11.
Richardson Read It is an annual districtwide event celebrating student choice and reading for pleasure.
Secondary schools will continue the tradition of devoting at least 20 minutes every class period to students and teachers participating in self-selected reading.
At the elementary level, principals determine how best to incorporate 20 minutes of self-selected, independent reading per student into the schedule.

Every year, the Richardson ISD Excellence in Education Foundation spotlights and rewards the work of 10 teachers of the year who represent the exceptional teaching and instruction across RISD.

Red River Showdown Bands at RHS
The University of Texas band will rehearse at Richardson Eagle-Mustang Stadium on Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the University of Oklahoma band will perform at halftime of the RHS-Molina varsity football game Friday night. The UT band rehearsal is free and open to the public.
Board Districts 2, 4 and 5 To Vote Under New System
Starting with next month’s election, Richardson ISD Trustees will be chosen using a new system.
Now, only voters living in specific geographic areas of RISD (called board districts) can vote for candidates running in that district. On the Nov. 5 ballot, candidates are running in board districts 2, 4, and 5.
The new method of electing trustees has no impact at all on which school students attend. Attendance boundaries remain unchanged. The five single-member board districts were formed earlier this year after careful consideration of numerous factors, including but not limited to traditional neighborhoods, school feeder patterns, demographic makeup via census data, and voting precincts.

Berkner Turns 50
Berkner High School STEM Academy is celebrating its 50th Anniversary.
Please join the learning community for a pep rally and tailgate party Friday Oct. 11 followed by the homecoming court presentation and the varsity football game at Ram-Wildcat Stadium.
On Sat. Oct. 12, Berkner will have its first ever parade followed by the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and a block party with food trucks, bounce houses, games and activity booths, as well as campus tours.

2019 Spirit Run
The 10th annual RISD Spirit Run is Nov. 2 at Galatyn Park.
Early-bird registration continues through Oct. 11, and there’s always the sleep-in option.
The race benefits the Excellence in Education Foundation for Richardson ISD, which supports excellence in teaching and high-achieving students, raises funds for the enrichment and innovations of teaching for all students and reinforces positive relations with the community.

Volunteering in RISD
A new background check is required every school year for all volunteers at RISD schools.
Parents, grandparents and community members must be cleared prior to volunteering at school activities, so the beginning of the school year is the best time to complete that process.
