Tony Stewart ran over and killed dirt track driver Kevin Ward Jr last night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Now police and investigators will try to determine whether this incident was truly an accident.

Ward and Stewart traded paint on turn 1 which eventually caused Ward to spin-out and end up in the wall. The caution flag was waved. Ward exited his car and was gesturing wildly until he was hit by Stewart, who was circling around on the caution lap.

Here are a couple of observations from the video and some things that police will have to figure out.

  1. The initial accident that sends Ward into the wall seems harmless.
  2. Ward was bouncing around on foot and looks to have been almost hit by another car prior.
  3. Stewart seems to be traveling at a faster speed than the other cars during the caution lap.
  4. Stewart’s car definitely fish tails into Ward.

At the basis of this investigation will be if Stewart fish-tailed on purpose or if it was a result of the conditions of a dirt track.

Very sad day for dirt track and car racing. Thoughts and prayers to Kevin Ward’s friends and family.
