After throwing 7.2 shutout innings in a Game 1 victory in the 2013 World Series, it was Jon Lester’s glove that took center stage. Cardinals minor league pitcher Tyler Melling pointed out that Lester was touching some sort of greenish substance in his glove before throwing pitches.

Here is a high quality view of what Melling tweeted about in the 7th inning.

John Lester Glove Substance

We went back and re-watched the Red Sox’s 8–1 victory over the Cardinals and also spotted this instance in the 6th inning.

Jon Lester Vaseline in Glove

In both cases, Lester very gently touches that area with the substance then touches his leg and grabs the brim of his hat. With this sequence it’s hard to imagine that the little dab of the substance could have much of an impact on the ball but why have something there? One thing that can’t be denied is that there is some sort of substance in his glove — Vaseline, grease, pine tar — who knows.

Lester also had the substance in his glove throughout the whole game as we spotted it in the 1st, 4th, and 5th innings as well.
