Lebron James Shows Us That Numbers DO Lie
I’m sorry to tell you ESPN but sometimes Numbers DO lie.
In the video above, fast forward to the 3:00 mark. Miami Heat forward Lebron James talks about some of his observations of the box score after his Game 1 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the 2013 NBA Finals.
The official Box Score listed the Spurs with 6 offensive rebounds and 21 second chance points. That doesn’t make much sense and James called it out:
“I’m very good at math, and uh. The only way you can get a second chance point is if you get an offensive rebound, right? Am I correct? So even if you hit a three [point basket] off 6 offensive rebounds, that’s still only 18 points. I don’t understand how that works.”
Here is the definition of Second Chance Points from the NBA.com Glossary.
Any points other than technical foul shots resulting from the possession following an offensive rebound. Possession is considered to have ended when the opposing team gains control of the ball.
