“Every artist was first an amateur.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Years ago, in junior high, my daughter drew a piece inspired by a photograph. Her art teacher must have noticed its potential and submitted it to an exhibition without telling us. We were thrilled to get an invitation but didn’t know if she’d won anything.

At the exhibition, we walked through the displays, admiring the artwork, until we spotted her piece. And there it was — with a prize beside it! Seeing that ribbon was a wonderful surprise.

As the only artist in our immediate family, she made us so happy and proud that day. It’s a memory we still treasure.

My daughter continued taking art classes throughout high school and even had the opportunity to showcase her artwork in a visual art exhibition during her senior year.

Experiences like this show the power of recognizing potential, celebrating progress, and encouraging creativity in those we love.
