Have you ever seen different cherry blossoms on the same tree?

Sakura, or cherry blossom, represents hope and new life and is Japan’s national flower. They bloom across the country from mid-March to early May each year.

Hanami, “flower watching” or “watching blossoms,” is a vital spring tradition in Japan. It began centuries ago when rice farmers used the blossoms’ arrival as a signal to start the rice planting season.

In 1912, after 25 years of efforts to bring cherry blossoms to the United States, the Japanese gave the U.S. over 3000 (12 types) of cherry trees as a gift of friendship. These were planted in Washington, DC, and have become the roots of the Cherry Blossom Festival held there each spring.
